IC-98

IC-98 is an artist duo based in Turku, Finland, formed by Visa Suonpää (b. 1968) and Patrik Söderlund (b. 1974). Their backgrounds lie in cultural history and visual art. Over their 28-year collaboration, they have produced art publications, site-specific works, public commissions, and moving image installations. IC-98 received the Finnish State Art Prize in 2009, was nominated for the Ars Fennica Award in 2014, represented Finland at the Venice Biennale in 2015, and were visiting professors at the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, in 2018.

In recent years, IC-98 has focused on artistic-political responses to the environmental crisis. Their animations Nekropolis, Epokhe, and Lands of Treasure, along with short films Omnia mutantur and Impivaara – A New World, explore the entanglement of eras, climates, and natural and cultural histories. Their site-specific works include House of Khronos (Pöytyä), Mare Tranquillitatis (Aalto University), IÄI (University of Helsinki’s Hyytiälä Forest Research Station), A Common Forest (Kalajoki and Järvenpää school), and Raa’anhaava Park of Wounded Earth (Kemijärvi, to be published in Autumn 2025) – all places intended for the emergence of new multispecies communities born out of crisis.

IC-98 has consistently collaborated with researchers and artists from various fields. Recent projects include A World in Waiting with Kustaa Saksi (a commission from the Victoria and Albert Museum), a series of language-based site-specific projects with poets Henriikka Tavi and Mikael Brygger, and Transit with choreographer Tero Saarinen (Skånes Dansteater / Malmö Opera).

IC-98 has also long been interested in the history of their home city. One of their best-known works is the 70-minute animation View from the Other Side (2011), which traces the transformation of Turku’s Pinella colonnade over several centuries.
